Celebrating 80 Years of Innovation in Rail
As the rail industry celebrates 200 years of railway excellence, E.G. Steele is proud to reflect on its own milestone - nearly 80 years serving the rail freight sector.

Founded in 1946 by Ernest George Steele, just a year after the end of the Second World War – the business’s journey began with a pioneering deal to become one of the first companies to import rail freight wagons into the UK from abroad. From these early days, E.G. Steele has grown from a family business in the heart of Scotland into a trusted global partner in wagon components and maintenance.

These archive photos are a reminder of where it all began - a moment of entrepreneurial spirit that continues to guide E.G. Steele, which is now as a fourth-generation family business. From the first wagons and Ernest’s groundbreaking 'Locopulsor' shunting machine, to the international supply chains the company supports today, E.G. Steele’s mission has never changed - to keep wagons moving and customers’ businesses on track.

Here’s to 200 years of rail, and to the journey ahead.
